Let them be a part of putting supplies in their backpack.
For younger children, put extra supplies like water, protein bars, Their name, a family photo, local and out of state contact information, allergies listed on a card, a mini first aid kit,  in their backpack and replenish as needed.

For older children,  lockers are a great place to store extra water, protein bars, contact information, a family photo and a mini first aid kit, allergies listed on a card as well.

Talk about what they need to do in the event of an emergency and practice with them, go through the first aid kit and explain how to use each of the items, also, explain to them the local and out of state contact list and remind them who it is they would be contacting, it will calm their fears.

Schools are prepared with an emergency plan if something big happens.  However, having supplies handy for them will give both of you comfort in knowing they have something to eat, drink and have your local and out of state contact information, if needed.
